Blog Marketing

What is blog marketing? It is essentially building up a blog for the purpose of marketing a product or service. What is essential for knowledge and understanding of how you can go about marketing the blog boils down to the fundamentals of online marketing. They will guide you to achieve the best results in blog marketing.

What then are these fundamentals that are building blocks to the marketing of your blog? Much serious thought and consideration have to be given to them. They are the pillars in blog marketing.

(1) Check out and confirm who will be your audience that you are targeting

Needless to say, this is the very first prerogative any marketer has to fulfill before embarking on the process of blog marketing. The product or service must be able to meet the need of the customer. This implies that the audience must be correctly targeted. In marketing terms, there must be correct customer segmentation.

(2) Search out the possible sources of online audience presence

After having segmented the target market, ascertain where and how can the targeted audience be found and reached on the web. A good suggestion would be putting up a survey on the web. Ask questions pertinent only to your product or service.

(3) Read the minds of the targeted audience

Delve into the minds of the audience target. Know what the targeted audience read. This will provide great support when it comes to studying their interests and understanding the different reasons for their reading blogs. This will be of great help when you want to find out in what ways blogs read by them have been useful to them. Plans can then be drawn up to revamp your blog for blog marketing success.

(4) Check out and confirm audience communication channel

Find out how to contact the targeted audience who is usually geographically dispersed. The norm will be via search engines. These will assist searches for your blog by the targeted audience. It is also possible to consider other communication methods such as the posting of interesting messages and the exchange of links amongst blogs. These alternatives will help in traffic growth for your blog.

(5) Determine ways to collect email addresses of targeted audience

The opt-in box will be needed to collect the email addresses of the targeted audience. This will help to grow the subscription list which can be the potential goldmine. Hang carrots to lure potential customers by giving freebies for instance free ebooks. The choice of opting in essentially means that the customers have the right to choose if they really want to release their email addresses and to receive future email marketing messages from you. To ensure privacy, insert a privacy policy which should categorically state that you as the marketer will protect all contact details and information given. The psychological fear of not knowing who they are talking to at the other end is overcome by the use of such a privacy policy. The building of your contact database will thus be made much easier.

(6) Know and understand the competition

Be armed with good knowledge and understanding about your competition. It is paramount to know the minutest details of the competitors in terms of who are they and what are they currently doing in their business. With the data collected, you will be able to write out a strategy to fine-tune your blog and blow your competition away.

In blog marketing, you can achieve the best results with the following steps:

(1) Careful selection of keywords

Your blog must be search-engine-ready. This means that even the brief description of your website must show up relevant keywords that are related to your niche business. This process of carefully selecting the best keywords may be tedious but it can extremely rewarding. Search engine optimization necessitates this action to be taken. Even the meta tag should preferably use description similar to that of the title. Search engine rankings can be affected by the title tag as well as the name of your blog. When selecting keywords, it is best to include the name of your blog into the title tag, not forgetting certain relevant keywords for the purpose of search engine optimization.

(2) Listings in search engines

To spread word about the birth of new blogs, it is usually done by listing with search engines. In submitting your blog to search engines, it is always useful to provide them with the brief description and keywords that you have specially selected. Of course, the operations of search engines do differ in their requirements for submission. Examples of search engines and directories that you can choose from include Google.com, Yahoo.com, Blogcatalog.com, Bloggernity.com, just to name a few.

(3) Get more links

The concept of links and reciprocal links plays an important role in blog marketing. Links must be relevant to your site; they must be speaking in same terms. The more links the merrier. Visitors will love to return as they realize your blog has become a valuable content resource to them. Undoubtedly, blogs are actually great link baits. There are several free tools designed specially to help out in the area of linking to other blogs. Examples include Blogroll.com and Del.icio.us.

(4) Use Feeds

When new updates are posted in the blog, it is strongly recommended to use blog feeds that will help to automate the important process of syndication of blog content by other bloggers. The concept of subscription to content from blog feeds enables members to monitor updates of blogs that they like. FeedBurner for instance helps to set up feeds.

(5) Use Pinging

Your blog must “ping” each time there is a new post written. The blog is being updated and notification must be sent out to your audience. This can be easily done with the help of blog search engines such as Blo.gs and Weblogs.com. for Typepad users. Ping-o-matic is another good choice.

(6) Place relevant comments on other blogs

Make many visits to related websites and place pertinent comments on those blogs. With rich and valuable content on your own blog, these bloggers would come to your site. This will imply more traffic from your targeted audience, especially if you have placed your URL in your post for the sole purpose of leading them back to your blog. In trackbacking and especially for blog marketing, the trackback feature will increase the awareness of your blog and blog content. This is simply done by putting a link to the page from where the post that you are referring to is taken from.

(7) Monitor and Identify shifting trends

It is imperative for the survival of any business to monitor what is happening with its competitors. What are the current changes taking place? What are the new trends that are appearing gradually? What will be your next course of action? It is no easy task but it must be done for the survival of your blog. The reason is that the blogosphere is always growing and getting filled with new blogs with new trends. Blogdex , Technorati and even BlogPulse will provide the much needed information on shifting trends and popularity.

Blog marketing is the new marketing era on the web. It provides a real hot source of revenue if given the strong setup and right impetus. It is a lucrative source of money. It can certainly be explosive.

Why Should you Blog?

It seems like everywhere we turn these days there is someone talking about blogging, blogs, the blogosphere, bloggers, and so on. Have you ever wondered what all the fuss is about?

And if so, have you ever thought about trying your hand at blogging?

Blogging is an internet phenomenon that can be described as a blend of personal diary, op ed commentary, and practical journalism. The word “blog” comes from “web log” which is a reference to the origins of blogging. In the early days, blogs were no more than online journals where people wrote about anything they wanted (what they had for dinner, how their mood was that day, etc.), much like the pen and paper journals that people have kept for centuries. However, with the growing ease of access to and familiarity with the internet, people realized they could now share their feelings with the entire world!

Blogging has since exploded into an inescapable new medium. You`ve probably heard people on TV talk about the huge effect that blogging has on popular culture. Some bloggers pride themselves on exposing everyone`s dirty little secrets (from politicians, to celebrities, and even other bloggers), while others have less caustic agendas and stick to simple commentary and discussion about an infinite array of subjects (from gardening to video games).

Keep in mind, though, blogs don`t always have to be frivolous. Some of the best and most accurate information about the Iraq War, for example, comes from people who embed themselves in the Middle East and use their blogs to instantly share their first-hand reports with the world.

Now that we`ve concluded our crash course in the history and definition of blogging, it`s time to get back to the original question.

Why should you blog?

I’m sure you’ve heard about some bloggers who command audiences that number in the millions, and others who have parlayed their blogs into multi-mullion dollar businesses. You probably want a piece of that luxury, and who wouldn`t? All you have to do is start up a free blog, write a few posts, and you`ll be sipping margaritas on a beach in no time. Right?

Well, not so fast.

It`s true that some people have found great success with their blogs, and there`s no reason to say that you won`t too, but the odds aren`t really in your favor. Estimates put the number of blogs at about 50 million (and growing every day) and without A LOT of effort and dedication (and a bit of luck) chances are good that your blog will never reach that superstar level of success.

I`m not telling you this to discourage you from starting a blog, I`m just trying to warn you that it`s not a one-way-ticket to the good life. Blogging can be a very fulfilling and exciting adventure whether or not you hit it big.

The most appealing part of blogging is that anyone can do it! The rules of blogging are not set down on unchanging stone tablets. Basic writing skills and a general appreciation for courtesy are recommended, but not required. You can write about anything you want, however you want; that’s the entire beauty of blogging.

So now that you`ve determined that you want to start a blog, the next step is to decide why. Let’s take a look at a few basic reasons why people blog.

People blog to make money.

It`s true, blogs can be a source of income, and there are a number of ways to make money blogging. Pay-per-click advertising services are a good way to start, or perhaps product review services that will pay a certain amount of money per review. If you`re ambitious enough you could even go so far as to write an e-book or set up an online shop and promote/distribute it on your blog.

People blog to find new career opportunities.

Blogging is a great way to practice your writing skills and host your writing samples (if you aspire to be a professional writer) or to showcase your art and design skills (if you want to be a professional artist or designer). A blog combined with an online photo-sharing website can be a simple and free photography portfolio that is instantly available to any prospective client anywhere in the world. In this age of e-mail and instant gratification there is no better way to connect with an employer than through a blog (just be sure to keep it professional).

People blog to share their passion with the world.

Whether you are a die hard sports fan or a model train fanatic, if you have any sort of passion or hobby you have an instant idea for a blog. You can try to provide the latest news and information about your “niche,” or you can aspire to be an expert resource to others who share your interests.

People blog to document their life.

The trusty online diary hasn`t gone out of style, and they certainly don`t have to be only for telling the world what you ate for breakfast. People can use blogs as a scrapbook of their children`s lives and instantly share photos and memories with the whole family, or they can blog to keep track of their diet and exercise regimen.

Now you have a good idea about what a blog is and why you should have one. The next step is to get out there and start blogging! Whatever you decide to blog about, just remember that the possibilities are truly endless.

Blog Maintenance

Blogging is rampant. Blogs are aplenty on the internet. Some are still around after many years, while some have simply stopped their activities. To keep the blogs alive, bloggers have to put in a lot of effort to effect continual blog maintenance to their blogs. Technology supports this move. Blog-publishing tools are helping to automate blog maintenance.

Certain factors that will have a bearing on the results of blog maintenance include the following:

(1) Quality of Content and Extent of Time Commitment

What your blog needs is content. It should be fresh and of quality. The reason for this is because you need to entice readers to return to your blog for more refreshing information. Your blog should not be an island with no visitors. It needs traffic to keep it alive and grow. Content for your blog should be updated actively. It can be scheduled to be on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. You have the prerogative to determine this schedule according to time availability. For bloggers with multiple blogs, efforts should be doubled in terms of apportioning the right amount of time to each blog. Different kinds of blogs may require different amount of time commitment from you. The main factor here is consistency. Each different blog under each different category should be consistently updated in line with the preset time commitment schedule. If you have a blog that is health care related, you can post it on a daily basis. With a sports-related blog, posting can be done weekly. Posting can also done anywhere at any time, for instance at internet cafes. Consistency is the keyword.

(2) Management of your Time Commitment

Posts can be written at any time of the day and at any place. When you have an inspiration or when an interesting topic strikes up in your mind, jot it down first. You should do the same even if many inspirations come to mind at the same time. There will be no scarcity of ideas to write your posts when you need them urgently. It would be good to fix a certain time of the day to compile your posts onto your blog. This would instill some discipline into your blogging activity. Staying focussed on your posts will certainly produce well-written posts that will be pleasing to read. Such diligence will certainly contribute positively to blog maintenance. Strict adherence to your posting time schedule is good for the blog, but do remember to inject some fun into the blogging. Blogging will appear to be robotic and writing posts will be a drag if it is turned into a boring and cumbersome activity.

(3) Simple and Fast posting

Different types of posts can be written in many styles that suit your writing mood. Posts may vary in length. They may be easy or slightly more difficult. Posts can be written in a simple and fast manner. Be straight to the point in sentence construction. You can include a little personalization and emotion. Things that you can write about include a topic about your favorite memory, your ideal wish, what have you heard on the news today, or even what thing you have done lately that makes you feel proud to share. You can show your passionate feelings on such topics, and this makes writing so easy, because these are things you are familiar with. Reading will be so much more fun and pleasurable.

(4) Archival of your posts

The archives that are part of your blog will support the function of archival for your posts. This is extremely effective as your readers will be able to retrieve them easily. You can decide on how the archival system should be constructed. Archives can be done on daily, weekly, or monthly basis. For instance, monthly archiving will show the link indicating a single month Jan 2008, Feb 2008 and so on. Archives can also be categorized according to different topics. It enables readers to click on the link of the relevant topic they are searching for. Archiving generally helps readers to search for older posts more easily. It will help you administratively especially when you intend to retrieve the dates of certain past programs. Archiving your posts efficiently serves an important role in blog maintenance.

(5) Install backup for your blog

There must be a backup system for your blog. This is imperative as it will save you the trouble of retyping your old posts. It can be done on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Technology makes blogging so enjoyable, but it is better to be safe than sorry. There is a host of vulnerabilities that servers are subject to. No one can tell when technology will fail us, therefore, it is indeed wise to perform backup for your blog. You must discipline yourselves to perform the backup, be it on any time basis. Do not gamble on it!

(6) Occurrence of closures of blog providers

No one can predict what will happen to the blog providers now and in the distant future. A closure to the business owing to poor returns is often the ultimate way out for the blog host. Observations reveal that some blog hosts are giving premium fee-based services in their attempt to keep their survival hopes alive. There are also others who agree to share their online advertising revenues with their bloggers. It will indeed be wise to back up both your blog posts and computer. This is to protect yourself from unnecessary work if even your computer decides to take a break! Always be proactive and ready for such an unfortunate twist of circumstances.

The list given is by no means exhaustive. Having your blog out there is an achievement in itself. The added responsibilities of ensuring that the blog is functioning well lie upon your shoulders. Your blog needs your help. You have to be diligently involved in blog maintenance.

3 Essential Elements of an Effective Business Blog

After being immersed in the Internet marketing industry for years and experimenting with dozens of different online marketing methods, I have found blogging to be one of the most effective business marketing tools. Not only does a business blog provide a space for fresh, regularly updated content (which search engines love), when done correctly a business blog can establish a loyal group of customers and promoters.

However, I have seen some companies make major flaws with their business blogs. These mistakes cause businesses to waste a great deal of resources on their business blogs with little or no return on investment. There are many factors that make a business blog successful or a flop. In this article, I’ll touch on the three of the most critical strategies for building an effective business blog.

Establishing an Overall Mission and Purpose for Your Business Blog

Though this may seem elementary, it’s amazing how many business blogs do not seem to have an established purpose! What need is your business blog going to fill for its readers? What topics are you going to cover on your blog? Having a clearly defined written ‘purpose’ for your business blog will help ensure that your blog content will stay on target and on topic so that you deliver what your readers expect every time.

Many business blogs make the mistake of writing content that is of interest to their peers rather than their target audience. If one of your primary objectives is to sell products, it’s important to create a resource that will be of benefit to your target audience.

Consider your business blog like a magazine. When you pick up your favorite magazine from the rack, you have a pretty good idea about what will be in the magazine. People subscribe to magazines only when they have a sense that the content in the magazine will be consistently relative to their interests.

The same goes for a business blog. One of the primary goals of a blog is to establish a large subscription base. This is done by consistently delivering content that is of interest to your readership base. Clearly defining the mission and purpose of your blog provides you with a guideline for creating content that is consistently useful to your readers.

Blog Marketing: Telling Not Selling

Blogs are not the place for a heavy hitting sales pitch. In fact, being too salesy is the fastest way to turn off blog readers. Bloggers don’t mind that you are trying to promote something – most are. But heavy-handed sales tactics just don’t fly in the blogosphere.

I’ve worked with some companies that were so worried about not sounding too promotional that they took their business blog to the opposite extreme. Reading their blog, you would have no idea what the company was or what they sold. One didn’t even have link back to their website! The key to creating effective business blogs is to find the right balance.

One way that you can introduce your products without being pushy is by choosing a layout that allows you to feature some of your products on every page. A two or three column blog layout works well for this purpose, as does a blog layout with several ‘feature’ boxes at the top.

Not ‘hiding’ the fact that you have something to offer helps you to establish your business as an expert in your niche. It’s perfectly fine to reference your products in your post in the context of a useful article that tells readers how to accomplish certain goals as opposed to a post that solely push your product. Readers begin to trust your content and learn to like you – and therefore are more likely to buy the products and services you offer.

Finding Your Voice

One of the greatest mistakes a people tend to make when creating a business blog is to write in ‘corporatese’ as opposed to a more conversational tone. Just like there is a certain accepted writing style for a press release or an editorial article, there is also a particular accepted writing style for blogs.

The most effective and popular business blogs have a personal voice. This scares some businesses and corporations – but it doesn’t have to! Select a few key company representatives as the personalities of the business blog. If you’re worried about giving people the right to instantly publish content, you can set up a system so that no post goes live without the approval of a single individual whose role is to ensure that the blog remains consistent and professional.

Have each person include their photo in the about page or even in the post with multi-author blogs. Post authors should respond to comments and engage in dialogue with readers in order to build and enhance relationship. Blog marketing is very much ‘relationship marketing.’ Responding to reader comments and questions is an important duty of a business blog writer or another assigned person within the organization.

Though a blog can be set up in a matter of minutes, there is a lot of planning and strategy that goes into creating a truly effective business blog. Starting you planning session by tackling these three core points is a great way to get your business blog off to an effective start!

10 Ways to Make Your Blog Stick Out

According to the Blog Herald there are currently around 200 million blogs worldwide! That is an extreme amount of blogs. Now, it is said that around 72 million of those blogs are in China. So a good portion aren’t even in the English niche. Let’s just say another 50 million blogs are also in other languages, so that leaves around 80 million blogs to compete against! Not that every single blog out there is in competition, but it is sure nice, if you are looking to create traffic to your site, to stand out in a sea of blogs. So I have compiled a list of 10 things you can do to make your blog stand out a little more than the next. These tips are not in order of importance!

Create a favicon for your blog. In a “Blog List” or a “Bookmark” your blog will stand out with it’s own “logo.” I don’t know about all of you, but the first thing I look at when I go to a website are the pictures. One of the first pictures to be shown is the Favicon. Any logo is better than the blank page that will show or the common blogger icon. For example, take a look at the Favicon for BloggingisSimple.com. I just took the “B” right from my header image. This will also show up in bookmarks, RSS feeds, several gadgets and widgets by Blogger, etc. Meta Tags are vital for search engines as well as for browsing tabs. This will let people know what they are looking at. This is the Title of your blog! I am by far an expert in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but do know a little. If you have a self-hosted Wordpress Blog, you can install widgets that will do all the tagging for you. However, some will recommend that you do this without the widget. So choose for yourself which will work best for your blog. One of the benefits of using a platform like Blogger, is that they are already ranking in the search engines, thus, your blog will also if you allow it to. There is an option in the blogger setup that allows you to choose whether or not you want your blog shown in the search engine listings. I have seen blogs show up in the search engines for my name in a matter of few weeks. Add character to your blog with a personalized background. This is useful with blogs hosted by Blogger, Wordpress.com, or hosted platforms. Since everyone is using the same templates, stick out like a sore thumb by customizing your background with either a picture, or an actual template. Just type â??Blogger Templates’ or â??Blogger Backgrounds’ in the search bar and explore your options. Add a custom header to your blog. Now, when I say custom, I don’t mean just putting a picture of you and yours in there. If that is all you’ve got, then it is better than nothing. When I mean custom, I mean getting one made with a border, images, your names, the title of your blog, and so on. Make it original. Make it nice and professional. That is one of the first things your readers will look at. If would like us to create one for you, fill out the “Contact Us” form of this site. Photos speak a million words! In the words of my wife, “When I get to a site, the first thing I do is scroll down the page and look at all the pictures. If I like the pictures, then I’ll go back to the top and start reading!” One cool thing you can do is add a slide show to your blog. Blogger has a gadget that can do this for you or you can create your own through Picasa or Flickr and embed it on your blog. Music can spice up your site or bring it down! If you doing a site for business purposes, having music will decline your traffic and kill your content, unless your content is about music. If you have a blog that is for personal use, your friends and family will enjoy some tunes as they check our your stuff. I have embedded music with Playlist.com before but there are many different music players you can use. Have Catchy Post Titles! Make sure your post titles reflect what you have in the content of your post. They must be relevant to each other. The next thing that people look at after the pictures are the post titles. Have the main point of your post in the title and make it exciting, short and to the point! For example: “10 ways to make your blog stand out” works better than “A couple of ways to make your blog stand out.” Adding video to your Blog will always spice things up a bit. It seems that people are turning away from reading to just listening and watching. So use that web cam that came with your computer or go get one. Just a few pointers with a video: Make sure you have good lighting, people will be able to hear and understand your message, and make it short. Don’t draw out a video, usually 1-2 minutes is plenty long. You might even go as far as using a simple movie maker software such as Windows Movie Maker to edit your video a little. If you do this, make sure to include your name in there and end it with your blogs URL. The last thing your visitors see will stick! You can then upload your video to YouTube, Google Video, or even Blogger and embed that on your blog. Always have interesting, useful, and relevant content. I once heard that you can insult, make fun of, criticize, compliment, or tongue bathe your readers, but by all means, DO NOT BORE THEM! Get a little personal with your readers without giving out your social security number, bank accounts and home address. The more you blog the better your writing skills will get. Interact with your readers. Relate, give advice, ask advice, and interact. This will do a number of things for your blog, but the most important, it will bring return visits and loyal readers who feel they have somewhat of an ownership in your blog. That is the best thing that can happen. They in turn will recommend your blog, because they have contributed. Leave comments on other blogs, especially of those who have left comments on yours. Answer emails and comments as often as you can and Do What You Say You Are Going To Do! Meaning, if you say you are going to write a post on a certain subject, do it!

So there you have it. Integrate and follow these tips and you will not only increase your traffic, but you will gain loyalty by having readers who leave your blog fulfilled!

More Blogging & Traffic: Create a Blog to Get Traffic to Your Website!

Why four from just two blogging packages? Here is the answer to that question, and how if you create a blog using each, you will maximize your earning potential from your products:

Blogger

Blogger is blogging software owned by Google. Most people run their blog from BlogSpot, Bloggers blogging fast domain.

However, where Word presses scores over Blogger is in the fact that the software can be uploaded to your website, and can be run from there. For more resources visit us at www.building-blog-empire.com. This enables you to use any of the thousands of Word press plugging and templates that provide an almost unlimited degree of functionality in your blogging that will help to drive traffic to your website.

When you create a blog with any of these two different packages, whether run from your own computer or from the blog host, you are able to provide fresh content daily to your virtual website. Because that is what a blog is: it is in effect a web page, in the same way that a Squid lens and a page on a website is a web page.

Bogging and Search Engines

Blogging allows you a presence on search engines such as Google and Yahoo, and allows those with little idea of SEO or even of web design, to sell products online. There was a time when blogs were a rarity and something new, but blogging is now a way for anybody that knows how to create a blog can drive traffic to their website or to their blog page and help they make money through free advertising.

However, even a blog has to be advertised. Blogging in itself is not an advertising technique, but one of displaying your thoughts, idea, products or advertising your products. Now, you might think I am being a bit duplicitous here, stating that blogging is not a means of advertising yet can be used to advertise! Yet both statements are true.

Is Blogging an Advertising Technique?

Yes and no. You can create a blog in order to get traffic to your website, and in that respect you are using your blog for advertising. You can place a link to your website: your squeeze page, sales page or just a content page. The question is, how do you get people to read your blog, and then click on one of these links? The link could be placed at the bottom of every post, and on a permanent page on your blog, but how do yet get traffic to your blog: you have the same problem now as getting traffic to your website!

What you have here is that blogging can be use to promote another site, whether it be a website, another blog or a social networking site such as Face book, MySpace or YouTube. You can use all of these to promote and sell products. You can also visit us at www.your-own-blog.com. However, how do you get people, to find your blog? Creating a blog is fine, but that is only the start.

Use Article Marketing in Blogging

There is one way, and that is article marketing. By writing articles about your niche or product, and then including a link to your blog in the article, you can use the article to advertise your blog. If you can persuade a reader to click on your link, they will reach your blog on which you provide them with links to your website, your other blogs and your Face book and MySpace home pages.
